AMD boss confirms high-end Navi cards are "on track"

Something to look forward to: Impatient to see how, or if, AMD challenges Nvida in the high-end graphics card market? It could happen sooner rather than later, as team red’s CEO and president, Lisa Su, has confirmed 7nm Navi GPUs that could compete against the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti are coming.

During AMD’s recent second-quarter earnings call, Su was asked for “a sense on 7nm high-end NAVI and mobile 7nm CPUs.” While she didn’t go into too much detail, Su replied with: “I would say they are coming. You should expect that our execution on those are on track, and we have a rich 7nm portfolio beyond the products that we have already announced in the upcoming quarters.”

AMD’s 7nm Radeon 5700 and 5700XT were released to universal praise last month. The cards offer an excellent price to performance ratio and directly rival the RTX 2060/Super and RTX 2070/Super. But Nvidia is unchallenged in the top-end, where the RTX 2080 Super and 2080 Ti rule.

With the Radeon RX 5700 family based on Navi 10, it was suspected that the next GPU from AMD would be next year's Navi 20. But recent rumors suggest that this high-end variant will be called Navi 12, which will feature 4,096 SPs (stream processors) and 64 CU (Compute Units), whereas the 5700XT has 2,560 SPs and 40 CUs. There’s also said to be a Navi 14 design aimed at the lower end of the market.

Whether these high-end AMD cards arrive later this year or next is unclear. Either way, consumers will no doubt welcome what will likely be a cheaper alternative to Nvidia’s flagship cards.

A 64CU version later this year is what we're looking for here. I had the impression up to this point with most media outlets that nothing higher end than the current Navi 10 parts was due until well into 2020. Colour me interested.

60 percent more shaders than a 5700XT. 2080Ti is about 50 percent faster than said 5700XT at 4K. Even with a fair bit lower core clocks you would expect a 64CU part to catch the attention of Nvidia's higher end cards.

Releasing something in Q1 2020 could put AMD's cards too close to Nvidia's future 7nm GPUs (if they release them in the second half of 2020).

AMD could also just release the low end Navi (560-580 replacements) in 2019 and wait for 7nm+ and 2nd gen Navi for their 2020 lineup. Although I can see them releasing the 5800 to attack the RTX 2080/2080S price point.

Pretty much a given that Navi 12 and 14 will be released in time for Christmas 2019. OEM's and system builders are going to want Navi 12 for XMAS as well. There is just no good reason to delay the release. Radeon VII is pretty much EOL so it's time to release the big dog!

I hope not.
I hope they stay away from the top end because I enjoy the fact the nvidia fan boys get to dig deep to purchase their cards and get to criticise AMD for not delivering competition.

Don't blame Nvidia because AMD doesn't make anything that can challenge.
It's not a criticism AMD doesn't make anything that competes, its the truth.
Also AMD are asking $700 for their Radeon VII...something an AMD fanboy would have to 'dig deep' to afford. Only its hotter, louder and slower then the $700 competition, with less features and more driver issues. If AMD priced the Radeon VII about $50-$100 cheaper to make up for its shortcomings, it would compete.

Because higher resolutions are very dependent on the Compute Units (or ROPs as NVidia labels theirs), The 4k performance is unlikely to match the 88 ROP 4352 Stream processor 2080ti, although it will most likely outperform the 64/2944 - RTX 2080 and the 64/3072 - RTX 2080 Super.

The only time any card has ever come out with performance contrary to this was the GTX 970, as its ROPs were reported to match another card (64), but performed worse. But, after much testing, it was confirmed to have fewer ROPs than reported (56), thus matching the expected performance.

One assumes that AMD are building higher end Navi cards to scale with adequate ROP performance and memory bandwidth.

Don't assume I meant they are taking a Navi 10, increasing the CUs and leaving the backend untouched from a 5700XT. I didn't. They wouldn't.

Guess it's time for the 3080Ti

Exactly, my assumption is its just waiting in the weeds. Nvidia has had the upper hand since the 780ti and I dont see them relinquishing the crown anytime soon seeing as they drop higher power cards a full year before AMD can compete now.

Hurts us consumers, pads nvidias wallets, shames amds name. We only have amd to blame for no competition and higher tiered pricing than ever.

Nah. You need to read the benchmark articles. The 5700 actually has comparable power consumption per performance efficiency with the Nvidia Turing 1600/2000 series.

The only issue with the current cards is it limited to the blower design, which is designed for smaller cases that don't have adequate case fan cooling. Once the after market 2 to 3 fan versions pop up then the 5700/5700XTs will be cooler and quieter.

Sounds like you ought to read some reviews actually. In the techspot review Steve noticed that the card ran quite hot at stock and when overclocked got very very hot, even pointing out that he felt liquid cooling will be popular for these cards for this reason - go check it out.

He also mentions that it runs hotter and uses more power than the faster 2070S.

Looking at the aftermarket card designs and reviews it’s obvious to anyone but wilfully ignorant AMD fanboys that these cards produce a lot of heat.

1) First, running hotter is not the same as using more power/producing more heat. A fanless RX460 can run hotter than an RX590 with 3 cooling fans even though the later has 3-4 times to TDP. Your comments about the RX5700s running hot like a space heater and thus preventing more cores in the higher variants implies you don't realize the RX5700 actually has similar overall power consumption and heat output per performance as the RTX series. You're mixtakenly using these terms like "running hot" and "uses more power" interchangeably when in reality, they don't have the same meaning.

2) Second, you comparing a 5700/5700XT with a 2070 Super makes no sense because the 2070 Super is $100 more expensive. The RX5700 XT is $400 while the 2070 Super is $500. The 5700 XT is at the price point of the regular RTX2070 or 2060 Super and it performs roughly comparable to the RTX2070 (though it even matches the RTX2070 Super in some benchmarks).

In terms of power for performance, the RX5700XT is slightly less efficient than the 2070 Regular by only 10 watts, while the RX5700 is more power efficient beats the 2060 regular pretty easily while consuming less power in Techspot's benchmarks. Take a look at Techspot's own benchmarks:

Hey AMD fan. It’s obviously a hot card, get over it. You can throw all sorts of graphs at me and tell me I can’t compare a card because of a price difference. The fact is, it’s already a very hot card and if you make it bigger it will be hotter still. Practically every reviewer states it’s a hot card and would benefit hugely from watercooling. Also you should see the power consumption when overclocked, it’s horrific!

You seem to be desperate from preventing the truth that this card runs hot from getting out there. Why? Do you own AMD stock?

But Nvidia isnt rehashing old products like intel was/is. They consistently introduce ground breaking performance the last few generations
